Apple Supplier Foxconn Questioned for Discrimination Against Married Women
Apple supplier, Foxconn, operating in India has been in the spotlight for their discriminatory policies against married women.
Parvathi and Janaki, sisters in their 20s first voiced their concerns when they were denied jobs in Foxconn over their marital status. After viewing job offers on WhatsApp they ventured on to the job facility. Even the local auto driver and security personnel informed them about the discrimination happening.
Foxconn believes that married women cause problems: childbearing, family duties, and more absences. The idea was further reinforced by Foxconn’s former HR to a media agency.
Amidst the international tension between Beijing and Washington, many US companies are turning to alternate suppliers from China. The government of India sees this as an opportunity to generate employment in India.

While the constitution of India does not discriminate against gender, marital status, or religion in the workplace. Such an incident has raised questions. However, the government has so far been silent on the issue.
Apple is also under fire, though the million-dollar company has clearly stated that it conducts audits to ensure its policy implementation. But such an incident has raised questions about Apple’s credibility.
